Dakota: A Living Language

Our mission is to preserve Dakota as a living language, and through it, transmit Dakota life ways to future generations. Eventually, we hope to build a language center that prepares increasing numbers of people, generation by generation, to lead our communities with WoDakota. As we seek to turn our vision into reality, we are committed to the following values:

  • Remain grass-roots. Work beyond and across tribal boundaries. Remain apolitical and rooted in the community. Be led by Dakota activists from all our communities.
  • Our leadership demonstrates Dakota Wicohan; that is, we seek to: live a healthy life, be Dakota relatives (7 values), be an ambassador for the organization, and be actively committed to the language (either learning, teaching, or advocating).
  • Build partnerships and relationships. Dakota Wicohan recognizes that there are many allies available. There is always generous reciprocity when we remain committed to building relationships.
  • Stay focused. Dakota Wicohan recognizes that there are many important issues in Indian country. We don’t get distracted by the politics or issues. We remain committed to language learning and teaching.
  • Cherish the language and maintain welcoming, nurturing and safe atmosphere. We are all learning and need affirmation for each piece we gain and can then contribute back to others.
